For fourteen years prior to the FAA she was a Flight Instructor and Chief Pilot for a FAA/Veterans Administration (VA)/Caledonia State approved flight school and air taxi operator. She taught advanced college aeronautics courses, was a corporate pilot, AIRSO (air reconnaissance) pilot for the State of California – CalFire, and flew Traffic Watch. She began flying in 1969.

While at UAL Phyllis was on the Accident/Incident team, was the Boeing 747 Tech and Safety Representative, the Pacific Regional Safety Rep, the Maintenance Safety Coordinator on the UAL Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) team (the first in the airline industry), and part of a 12 man Ad Hoc Flight Operations team that reported directly to the Vice President of Operations.

Major events during her years at UAL include: flying U.S. troupes during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Tech Advisor on the TWA 800 (747 New York) accident, in the air flying from Japan to the U.S. on 9/11, and part team of five that performed aircraft maintenance facility inspections in Korea and China for a planned out sourced off shore maintenance contract. She was honored with the D.B. Robinson Air Safety Award for “life time achievement as an aviation safety advocate” (to date the first and only woman to receive this award).

Phyllis is currently a Commissioner with the Monterey County Land Use Commission, the immediate past President of the Retired United Pilots Association (RUPA) and presently remains on the RUPA Executive Board. She is also a 20 year member of the Carmel Valley Rotary Club and President-Elect 2016-2017.
